The aim of this course is to introduce and broaden students' understanding of the tradition of oil painting within art history.

ART104 Painting: Foundation Painting in Siena

Course Description
This course is for students of all levels who wish to focus on the traditional techniques of object and figure painting, in oils. The fundamental principles and elements of painting are introduced and studied in lessons involving studio work, supplemented by demonstrations and slide lectures. All the major techniques will be covered, including stretching canvases, preparing grounds, brushwork, color mixing, mediums and glazes.
The aim of this course is to introduce and broaden students' understanding of the tradition of oil painting within art history. Lessons will be supplemented with slide lectures of both master works and contemporary works, helping to place the student within a broader context of art-making. There will also be an on-site visit to a museum in Siena, to experience the richness of its' artistic heritage, and to better place themselves in an historical context.
Observation exercises will provide the ground for our explorations in painting, providing a basis for students' individual projects in the latter part of the semester. The final projects, based on their experience in Siena, will involve conceptual and visual stages that lead to resolved works. There will be a final exhibition.

Prerequisites
No previous painting or drawing experience is required.

Course Hours
The course meets twice a week for a total of 5 hours a week, for a total of 60 hrs during the semester. Suggested credits: 3; 

Student Learning Expectations
The aim of this course is to introduce and broaden students' understanding of the tradition of oil painting within art history, and to study and work in a lineage of art-making. It will provide a foundation in painting as well as visual thinking, from which the student can continue to develop and draw from for further research and exploration.
